The Sloth Institute (TSI) is dedicated to helping one of the most charismatic animals in Costa Rica, the sloth. Established in 2014, TSI’s vision is to expand scientific knowledge and education about the sloth to enhance their well-being and assure their conservation around the globe. TSI’s ongoing dedication to research, specializing in the behavior, health and welfare of recently released, wild and captive sloths, has allowed for increased understanding of proper care and conservation needs of the species. With this new knowledge and successful reintroductions via Saving Sloths Together, a collaboration project with Toucan Rescue Ranch (toucanrescueranch.org), TSI continues to work to shift previous belief that hand-raised and captive sloths could not flourish in the wild. The Sloth Institute’s 3 part mission: 1. RESEARCH of captive, wild and recently released sloths. 2. EDUCATION to generate and disseminate responsible information about sloths both in the local community and around the world. 3. CONSERVATION programs that negate human encroachment issues impacting sloth welfare and habitat.
